Background:

Balfour is a Junior School for children between the ages of seven and eleven years. Its admission limit is 105 for each of four-year groups. The school is maintained by the local authority. Currently there are 418 pupils on roll. The school was built in 1924 as an infant, junior, and secondary school. Over the years the school has catered for different age groups. In 1970 a new infant school was built next to Balfour to accommodate the increasing school population, and since 1985 Balfour has been a Junior School. Additional classrooms were added in the 1960s and a new hall was completed in 1987. In 1995 a second hall and new office accommodation were built, and a kitchen was provided. In 1999 the school verandas were enclosed.The school uses a local swimming pool all year round, and children are taught to swim by qualified staff. During indoor lessons gymnastics is taught to the classes, and in games lessons children play football, rugby, netball, basketball and hockey. Cross-country running is a popular sport at the school.
