Background:

Helenswood is a community school for girls of all abilities aged 11 to 19. The school's origins date from 1870. In 1978 Hastings High School (Grammar) became Helenswood and the Lower School occupied the new buildings at Maplehurst. Situated on The Ridge, both Lower and Upper Schools are set in beautiful grounds with fine views. In the Lower School, pupils have two lessons each week of PE lessons to develop each child's physical capabilities and to encourage favourable attitudes towards physical activity. Helenswood is a non-denominational school. Collective Worship is of a broadly Christian nature. The programme includes: netball, football, athletics, gymnastics, basketball, tennis, dance, badminton, stoolball, hockey, rugby and rounders. In the Upper School all students have three lessons of PE a fortnight. Girls learning instruments are encouraged to bring them along to music lessons so that strong links are maintained between curricular and extra-curricular work. The school aims to provide a friendly and civilised environment in which each girl can feel secure as she is guided through adolescence towards adulthood.
