Background:

St Philip's was founded in Uckfield as a religious school in 1885 and has been sited in its present buildings since 1946. St Philip's was run by the nuns of the Sisters of Mercy for over 100 years but is now staffed by teachers. The old Victorian building has been 'completely refurbished and modernised' in a project costing over three quarters of a million pounds and new buildings sit alongside the older classrooms. There are now seven classrooms together with a new hall, library, group rooms, staff room, parents' room and medical room. The school is situated on a 'large open site with pleasant rural views'. There is a 'large' school field with two football pitches and a hard playground area, which can be used for netball. There is also an open-air heated swimming pool, which is used in the summer. The school offers a 'wide range' of after-school activities, sporting and musical, and the school is proud of its reputation for sport. Football and netball teams have been district and county champions several times in recent years. Boys' football, girls' football and mixed netball teams are current holders of 'several trophies'. The school is very much part of the local and church community and charity fund-raising is a main contribution from the school to the local community. The school aims to 'strive for the best possible education in faith and academic achievement'.
