Background:
The school was founded in 1958 on 17.5 acre grounds in the heart of rural Sussex. Most pupils come from six or seven villages surrounding the school and many are from rural backgrounds. The school is proud of exam results that are higher than might be expected from the ability of pupils on intake. The 'attractively functional' buildings contain 25 classrooms, laboratories, music suite with multi-track recording studio, drama studio, library-cum-learning resource centre and 'state-of-the-art' sports hall. There are also recently-added wings for learning support and for design technology, incorporating computer-aided design facilities. There are plans to create a floodlit, all-weather playing field for school and community use. Notable sporting success has been achieved in hockey recently and individuals have won many county caps. Though the school sees itself as well-rounded, there is 'particular strength' in the arts, including a 'well-established' school choir and orchestra. There are Parent-Teacher and Former Pupils' Associations. 'We want all our pupils to become fulfilled, responsible members of society, whatever their career choice may be. It is our task to bring the best out of every pupil in our care'.
