Background:
Hoddern County Junior school was opened in September 1970 in Peacehaven, situated on the coast between Brighton and Newhaven. Many of the houses in the area are owner-occupied, and there is also a large area of community and housing association properties. A new school is being built in 2000 as part of the Peacehaven Schools PFI Project. The current school comprises a single storey building with eight classrooms, a library and a hall, 'large' playground, 'extensive' playing field space and an outdoor swimming pool. As well as teaching all areas of the national curriculum the school has 'a very strong PSHE policy which promotes the development of the self esteem of pupils by providing opportunities to take part in clubs, concerts and residential trips'. The school competes in all the inter-school sports competitions and takes part in music and drama festivals. Each year the pupils choose a charity to support and fund-raising events, such as a Christmas Concert, are organised.
