Background:
Ocklynge Junior School opened in 1972 with the amalgamation of St Mary's Boys' and Ocklynge Girls' Schools. Since then there have been a 'number of extensions and improvements' to the buildings, which are situated in a residential area near the centre of Eastbourne. In addition to the classrooms the school now benefits from having a 'large multi-purpose hall with a stage, a second carpeted hall used for drama, music and dance, a practical room for art and crafts, a newly refurbished library, a special educational needs room, a swimming pool and a fully-equipped computer room'. The school has 'extensive' playing fields and a sports pavilion. Ocklynge are 'national gymnastics champions' and have 'highly successful' teams in many other sports. The school also has links with local sports clubs, churches and rotary clubs and raises 'substantial' amounts for charity.
